What to visit in Nazaré

Flint

A fishing village of medieval origin, it was one of the most important sea ports in the Coutos de Alcobaça.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, it was an active naval shipyard, where ships and caravels left for the Discoveries. In this place you can visit the Igreja Matriz de N. Sra. das Areias, from the 16th century and also the Igreja Misericórdia, in Manueline style built in the 17th century.

Monte de Sao Bras

Dolomitic hill that emerges in the middle of a landscape of dunes and pine forest.

With an altitude of 156m, it is a point of reference for navigators. Archaeological finds confirm pre-Roman occupation. The interest of the local flora earned it the status of Classified Site in 1979.

Nazaré site

Place of pilgrimage since the twelfth century, the genesis of the name of the village is found here, due to the legend of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré.

Legend has it that D. Fuas Roupinho, who used to hunt in the area, on a foggy day was chasing a deer, which disappeared over the precipice. He saved himself by invoking the Virgin to whom he was devoted. In thanksgiving for the miracle, he ordered the erection of the Hermitage of Memory in this place.

Shrine of Our Lady from Nazareth

In 1377, King Fernando ordered the construction of the primitive church to house the sacred image and to welcome the large number of pilgrims visiting Senhora da
Nazaré, becoming the oldest and most important Portuguese Marian Sanctuary until the beginning of the 20th century.

Dr Museum Joaquim Manso

The Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum Dr. Joaquim Manso, opened on June 6, 1976, is a museum with a regional character, with very heterogeneous collections (ethnography, archaeology, painting, sculpture, photography and others) and temporary exhibitions. It highlights maritime ethnography, through the exhibition of the various types of artisanal fishing vessels from Nazaré and the traditional costume.

Nazareth Lift

Inaugurated in 1889, the Ascensor da Nazaré was created by Engineer Raul Mesnier du Ponsard, a disciple of Eiffel, in order to facilitate the arrival of pilgrims to Senhora da Nazaré.

With an inclination of 42%, today the Ascensor is a mandatory reference for all who visit Nazaré.

Dry Fish Clothesline

The tradition of drying fish in the sun is still alive in Nazaré.

Dried fish is no longer a way of preserving food for days of shortage, but a delicacy much sought after by tourists. The place where the fish is dried, known locally as a drying rack, is also a hallmark of Nazaré and one of the living symbols of Nazarene maritime culture.

Gastronomy

Discover typical Nazarene food

In Nazarene cuisine, fish and seafood prevail. The typical Nazarene stew, fresh grilled fish such as sardines, horse mackerel and sea bass, the fish pasta usually made with sea bass or sea bream and the fish cataplana are some of the most characteristic dishes.

In traditional sweets, we have Sardinhas, Támares, Foquins and Nazarenos, found
in the various pastry shops in Nazaré.
